No. I have deliberately removed this feature. Joomla! 1.7 has some minor database schema changes compared to Joomla! 1.6. The only way to apply them is to use Joomla!'s own updater.

However, I am aware that the integrated Joomla! update doesn't work very well on many shared and VPS hosting environments. In this case, do this:
- Take your site off-line
- Take a backup
- Restore the backup on a local server (XAMPP, WAMPserver, MAMP or similar)
- Run the integrated Joomla! update. It may take up to 10 minutes. Don't be fooled by the white page being displayed. Give it time.
- Backup your updated local site
- Restore it to the live host
- Put your site back on-line

I know this is a kludge, but unless Joomla! core developers decide to listen to me and fix the update method to not blow up on shared and VPS environments with CPU usage limits, this is the only viable alternative that I know of.

Thank you for the fast and detailed information!

I have my own servers configured and it still breaks the update. I had to upgrade my 1.6 sites manually.

Yeah, the Joomla! updater does not work. Eventually, the PLT will understand that I do know why it doesn't work and will listen to me. Hopefully, this will happen before hell freezes over. But I don't hold too much hope.

Well, if they don't patch it within a month, I will ultimately have to create my own 1.6-to-1.7 and, later, 1.7-to-1.8 upgrade method *sigh*

I have not seen much talk about this on the dev list either and nothing on bug squad that I have read. One would think they would realize the importance of this and get it fixed. Just so you know all of us that haunt your forum really appreciate everything you do...;)

I have Admin Tools Professional at v2.1.5 and Joomla! Core at v1.6.4, and the only Joomla! upgrade option available to me after multiple reloads is Reinstall 1.6.6 (i.e. Joomla! v1.6.5 upgrade path is not available to me, no matter how many times I Reload this information from the server).

Is it safe to Reinstall 1.6.6 in my circumstance without thrashing my template and extensions?

Thanks for the great work you do.

This is normal. Not all Joomla! 1.6 versions have upgrade packages available. You can safely click on the Reinstall button; it will just update your site, despite the label of the button. After you do that, you will see the option to upgrade to 1.7.0.

Generic advice: before attempting to update your site to a new Joomla! version it is strongly advised to take a full site backup for safety reasons. Please consider downloading the backup archive to your local PC to safeguard it against any problem that may arise during the update process.

Oops! Frontend is no longer accessible after Joomla! v1.6.6 to v1.7 upgrade via Admin Tools Pro.

Firefox shows a blank page. Chrome reports HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

The update from 1.6.4 to 1.6.6 was without issues, and everything seemed to work fine on the frontend and backend after the update. I then proceeded with the 1.7 upgrade which also completed successfully, according to ATPro. But then, I've been unable to access the frontend ever since.

Hi!

First try downloading the Joomla! 1.7.0 package, extract it locally and upload all files and directories except the "installation" directory to your site.

If this doesn't help, you will have to additionally follow Joomla!'s official manual update instructions which sums up to removing some unused files and running three SQL commands.

If that still doesn't help, one of your plugins, modules, templates or components used on your site's front-end is not compatible with Joomla! 1.7. For instance, if you have a RocketTheme template you must upgrade to the latest release of the Gantry framework or your template might not even work on Joomla! 1.7. Other popular extensions, like Community Builder, had similar issues with Joomla! 1.7 and fixed them in their latest releases. If you are not sure about the compatibility status of your extensions with Joomla! 1.7, please ask their respective authors. Note: All the latest releases of AkeebaBackup.com software have been tested and working with the latest releases of Joomla! 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7.
