Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes
Have I searched the forum before posting? yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? yes
Joomla! version: (1.5.23)
PHP version: (5.3)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (Rochen)
Admin Tools Professional version: (2.05)

Description of my issue:

Hello Nicholas!

Got the following messages when trying to fix permissions for my pixsearch site search engine module which stopped working after install of Admintools:

# JFTP::write: Bad response
# Your cache directory (/home/mysite/public_html/cache) is not writable. Akeeba Backup Lazy Scheduling plugin will not work until you fix this issue.
# JFTP::store: Bad response

I tried to install the Admin Tools update and got this additional error message:

# Warning! Failed to move file.
# JFTP::write: Bad response

None of this makes any sense to me. Not only is this annoying, but the last message above is appearing on my home page for all the world to see, in large red font!

All cache permissions are set to 755 for directories and 644 for all files.

Not a happy day today :)

Your error message is irrelevant with Admin Tools. You are using the Akeeba Backup Lazy Scheduling plugin which is deprecated and removed from Akeeba Backup 3.3.a1 and later. Please disable the Lazy Scheduling plugin.

Regarding the installation message, it occurs because you are attempting to use Joomla!'s FTP options which are not required and, in fact, should never be turned on on a site hosted at Rochen. Please go to your site's Global Configuration, find the "Enable FTP" option and uncheck it.

Hey Nicholas!

A great big Thank You! Site restored to normal.

You know, I ran a test of Akeeba backup and it worked just fine. So I couldn't understand the error message.

I did turn on the Joomla FTP to facilitate uploading the update for Admin Tools Pro. When I tried to update I got the message saying my FTP needed to be configure so I did that. But it still didn't work so I downloaded it from the downloads page.
Now I have 2.1.1 installed successfully.

Still have to figure out why pixsearch search engine isn't working. I have asked those people to tell me what the permissions should be, but if they won't/can't help, I may come back here for some further guidance.

Thanks much!

You're welcome!

Just remember that Rochen is using suPHP which means that you should never, ever enable the FTP on your sites when hosted on their servers. It's simply not necessary and can cause issues instead of solving anything :)

If you can't get around how to make pixsearch work, please try first taking a look here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/admin-tools/server-protection.html#determine-required-exceptions

If that still doesn't help, ping us :)

Well, Nicholas,

I did read that part of the PDF, and it looked easy using Google Chrome, but I have Firebug so I tried the "Net" menu, but I couldn't make heads or tales out of the results.

So I went and did a websearch(Google) and found where problems with pixsearch were mentioned. And one person said there was a conflict between pixsearch and mootools upgrade plugin. So I disabled it. Bingo! Pixsearch is working perfectly. I also read that Kunena 1.6 required mtupgrade plugin but my Kunena is working perfectly despite not having the plugin active. We will see. : )

But I have discovered another problem, which is not directly addressed in your instructional PDF. My Firestats statistical program has ceased functioning. It looks like your example in the PDF of a page is not rendering css.

Would you recommend I install Google Chrome as the fastest way to find out which files in Firestats need to be imported into the file exceptions block? I already imported the base.css file and that did nothing at all!

Best,

Lowtech

It's been a while since I last used Firebug, but I'll give it a shot :) Activate the Net panel and click on "All" in the ribbon below it. Look in the status column for "403 Forbidden". Click on the URL on the left of the status column and a pane expands below. Clicking on Response should show to 403 error. Now copy the URL (right click on it, Copy Location) and proceed as per the instructions in the PDF.

Well, if all else fails, just install Google Chrome which, incidentally, has a much better support for HTML4 and CSS3, as well as a dramatically increased speed compared to Firefox :)

Nicholas, Thank YOU!

It worked. I got 403 errors on four files, inserted them into exceptions in .htaccess maker>> server protection>> exceptions. Now Firestats works perfectly.

By the way, the four files, if any Firestats users are interested, were:
firestats/css/base.css.php
firestats/css/mktree.css.php
firestats/js/firestats.js.php
firestats/php/ajax-handler.php

I am also pleased to report that with the Honey Pot activated (in the Web Application Firewall>> Configure WAF) about a dozen spambots are being turned away daily and I have very little spam anymore. They weren't doing harm to the site (as far as I know) but they were messing up the site stats.

I guess I will install Google Chrome now. Its just that I hate encouraging another growing web colossus!

Much thanks, again!

PS

When I created the new .htaccess file in .htaccess Maker, I was surprised and disappointed to see that my two hundred access deny IPs were gone. Then I realized what custom .htaccess rules>> "add at the bottom of the file" is for, so I copied them from the backup .htaccess admin tools file and pasted them into the space provided. I then tested it by adding a new spambot using cPanel's IP Deny manager and the denied IP immediately appeared where it should, at the end of the list in the new .htaccess file.

Works really well.

You're welcome :)

Regarding the denied IPs, there is an easier alternative. You can simply go to Components, Admin Tools, Web Application Firewall, IP Blacklist and add the IPs in there. Then go to WAF Configuration and check the blacklisting option towards the top.

Nicholas,

Thanks for all the good advice. I also used the procedure you describe to get my stats program, j4Age, working again. Using the "Net" feature in Firebug I found a 403 and a 404 error and granted exceptions for those two files.

I also installed Google Chrome just to try it. My! It is blindingly fast. Makes my good old Firefox seem pokey slow.

Best,

Yeah, Google Chrome is blazing fast. That's why I use it as my main browser since a few months ago :D
