If you are having these issues then you have more problems than the need to block the email addresses.

Hi. I don't have this problem. I ask it because i noticed that there are several plugins on JED that allow this protection. So i need to know if i have to install this plugin or can i use this feature using the firewall. Tha's all.

I have not seen this feature built into Admin Tools. I personally have never had a problem with bots harvesting email addresses. The only time I would see this as a problem is if the email address was on a page or module somewhere on the site. Email addresses should never be visible on a page and as long as you don't have that problem you are not going to need to worry about blocking them.

Hello Francesco,

What you want is included (for the most part) in Joomla! itself. It's the "System - Email Cloak" plugin. However, that plugin only works in main content but not in modules or third-party extensions which do not fire content plugins.

Admin Tools doesn't include an email cloaking feature, but it includes an integration with the Bad Behavior library, popularised by WordPress. The essence of this library is that it scans the incoming requests to your site and blocks what looks like a mail harvesting robot or a hacker trying to make their way through your site. It also allows integration with Project Honeypot's HTTP:BL IP blacklisting which protects against even more hackers and mail harvesting robots.

That said, there is no 100% protection against spam. I have an email address which I hadn't published anywhere for 2 years. However, I was using it for private communication with friends. After a few months, I started receiving spam. A lot of it! Right now, I receive 300 spam messages per day. They only remedy which allows me to regain my sanity is that I'm using Google Apps (the branded version of GMail) which are able to catch 99.999% of spam messages without many false positives.

just adding to that, even a standard configuration of spam SpamAssassin will eliminate a very high % of spam with minimum false positives. Properly tweaked it can eliminate almost all spam with little to no false positives. i have had alot of good results with it.

I agree also, google apps is the SH$T, its great service and i personally recommend it to many clients. Especially those who run an office with 10+ seats and pop accounts without any backups whatsoever :)
