Nicholas,

How much knowledge can you share on certainly security or in actual fact obscure desktop apps like norton blocking sites with things like htaccess redirects in place. I have seen a few things happen and through i would ask the question.

I can share some bits of information:

Norton Internet Security is worse than Internet Exploder... er... Explorer I mean. It sucks your RAM and drains your CPU while providing virtually no protection against real threats and causing all kind of issues because of its "intelligent" scanning (read: blocking everything useful on the web that's not used in GMail and YouTube).

Even worse, you have AVG. Not only it's sub-par in terms of protection, it takes the "I will f*** your sites up" saga to a whole new level. One of its "features" (I would call it "anti-feature") -which comes enabled by default- is a link scanner. What it does? It injects its own Javascript on the engine, making sure that every link and every XHR request will be posted (through XHR!) to a private web service it runs on your local PC so that it is "scanned". Of course it does so in such a manner that completely screws up any Javascript intensive application, be it a web mail or Akeeba Backup.

Then we have some Firefox extensions. NoScript is very good, but it's too good to be used in "dumb user mode". It blocks all Javascript by default, unless you explicitly tell it not to. This has lead to a whole array of bogus bug reports on this forum. There are also some other extensions, theoretically unrelated to the backup procedure (such as video downloaders, for instance) which do interfere with page loads and do kill your backup.

That's why I am using Google Chrome on Mac OS X ;)

lol, gotta love you man, specifically your passion.

In conclusion, on a scale of stupidity.

a. do we blame this obscure software
b. do we blame the client who thinks something is wrong with their site because of "a"
c. both and more.

while we are at it, IE, what a fu&%$ng nightmare. I hope like all hell they come to market with something decient and lightwight soon, how is it possible that they are so far behind with such a dinosaur product? WTF is with that?

You can't blame the client, you can educate him. It's not their fault that they are not educated. The big companies instil fear upon the user so that they can later cash in by selling them their software as the answer to this made up fear. The reality is that no software will protect you unless you are careful on your own right. In that respect, you'd better chose the product that assumes you're being careful and is as less intrusive as possible. As I say, security software (and I do produce security software, of a different kind than Norton and AVG of course) is like contraception. You can draw your own conclusions from here ;)

Regarding IE, when I have someone tell me what a great browser it is I usually tell them "If IE is the answer, you are asking the wrong question" :D
