First try running the Configuration Wizard by clicking its button on Akeeba Backup's Control Panel page. If it fails to run the first time (i.e. it gets stuck after the database step) please try to run it again.
If this doesn't help, try using a different browser as IE8 is known to be a major headache for Javascript-intensive applications. I suggest using a clean installation of
Firefox Portable.
If this still doesn't help and you have AVG installed, you
must disable its Link Checker feature and
reboot your computer. AVG's Link Checker screws up all Javascript calls by throwing off time-sensitive Javascript operations, like the backup process. If you don't have AVG but another antivirus/firewall/Internet security application, try temporarily disabling it.
If all else fails, please try using a different computer connected to the Internet using a different ISP. Sometimes it's the computer configuration or an over-eager ISP traffic filter which halts the backup process.
