In a reply to an Akeeba Backup topic you made it clear that it's not advisable to use alpha versions on production sites, so I'll wait a bit until the stable release is ready. However, this sounds like a powerfull tool and even with a stable release it can severely cripple a site when things go wrong. So first of all I'm curious how confident you are things won't go wrong with the stable release. Secondly I wonder if you can predict what kind of problems one may experience, even when everything works as intended.

I am using Admin Tools on this site, which is my only source of income. If it goes down, I go down. Am I confident about Admin Tools? Yes, I absolutely am. I also believe in dogfooding: I always use the software I publish. I'll never publish something I am not confident enough to use it on my own site.

Regarding the potential problems, I can predict the following:

1. Fixing permissions on a shared host where everything is owned by Apache will "cut off" your FTP access. Solution: I'll add the ability to customize the default permission settings and allow you to set different permissions for select directories (this is a beta 1 objective)

2. Enabling all options in the .htaccess maker will result in white screens of death / internal server error messages on most commercial hosts. As I documented it on the manual, there's no safer way to do that other than trial and error. Solution: trial and error, ideally on a testing subdomain before trying it your live site.

3. If your database is screwed up, any attempt to repair tables might cause a loss of data. This is extremely rare and would anyway happen spontaneously during a normal write operation at some point. In all fairness, after 8 years of working with MySQL this has only happened once to me and the cause was a dying hard disk hosting the database files. Solution: don't use dead cheap hosting with ancient, overcrowded hardware.

4. If you are extremely unlucky you might earn yourself the triple jackpot: lock you out of FTP, screw up the .htaccess and ban your IP address from accessing the site. Well, the good thing is that your hosting control panel can bail you out of this situtation, by removing the .htaccess and disabling the plugin from within its database record. However, this is a user error. Admin Tools is a very powerful tool. As you would do with a chainsaw, you have to read the instructions and be careful when using it. Unlike a chainsaw, though, once you configure it you can just let it be.
