Hello,

I have about 400 redirects in the redirects table in the admin tools on the live production site. Im wondering, If I duplicate this site via my hosting control panel to another domain for development reasons, and all the redirects remain, will this break anything in the production site? I would think since its a totally separate domain it should have no effect on the production site.

Any tips on moving between a dev and prod site for these redirect and how to manage them?

Thanks,

Trevor

I don't know how your host's site duplication works, so I can't really answer this question with a straightforward yes or no reply.

The domain name has nothing to do with it. Nor does the filesystem path where each site's root is located in. What matters is the database.

The redirections are stored in a database table, #__admintools_redirects. As long as each site uses a different database, or at least a different database prefix, they are isolated from each other. Changes in one site will NOT be reflected on the other.

If you are in doubt about what your host does, you can always use our free of charge Akeeba Backup Core software to take a backup of the production site and restore it into a new, empty subdomain and a new database.

In either case, make sure that the subdomain's web root is outside the production site's web root. Otherwise, the production site's .htaccess file will be causing you problems on the cloned site.
