I recently updated from 4.4.5 to 5.1.1 using Akeeba backup. I am able to log into the backend, but when I try the front, I get this error:

Sorry, your PHP version is not supported.

Your host needs to use PHP version 8.1.0 or newer to run this version of Joomla.

I am using php 8.3.7. I ran a new htaccess maker.  I don't know what else to check or change.

Please help.

I have cleared my browser cache and Siteground's cache.

Another clue--
if I add /index.php to the domain name, I can see the Home page. So I temporarily changed the Use URL Rewriting to no.

The PHP version is reported by PHP itself using the constant PHP_VERSION. Neither Joomla nor us "detect" anything. It's what your server actually runs, as reported by your server itself.

Ask your host how to change the PHP version in their hosting control panel. This usually just makes a small change in the .htaccess file (usually adding / changing an AddHandler line towards the bottom of the file). If you're using Admin Tools' .htaccess Maker just remember to transcribe it to the custom code to put at the bottom of the file as per the documentation instructions.
