Hi, I need to make a development copy of my website. I tried creating a copy of the web site and the database and updating the config file to point to correct folders, etc. At one point, I was able to see the home page, and then got the error. I've tried so many different things that I'm not sure what allowed that. This is the error:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access this resource.

I'm pretty certain it has something to do with the Admin Tools, but I can't figure it out. Do you have any suggestions for me to try? Is there anything I should change or turn off in the Admin Tools before I copy the site over? Or do I just need to uninstall it, then copy the site, then reinstall on the working site?

Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

since you created an enhanced version of the .htaccess file using the Htaccess Maker, any request to a subfolder will be blocked. You have to add the folder name that contains your dev site inside the field "Allow direct access, including .php files, to these directories", then save and recreate the .htaccess file.

That should fix your issue.

Thank you, but I still do not quite understand. Can you please provide me with example code to add to the .htaccess file? And also, the sites are in 2 separate folders with 2 separate .htaccess files within each. Does this matter?

You do not have to write anything inside the .htaccess file. Your "dev" site is inside a new folder of your website or did you copy it locally?

If it's just inside a folder of your current website, get inside the Htaccess Maker page, in the field "Allow direct access, including .php files, to these directories" add the name of the folder that contains your dev site and then hit the "Save and create .htaccess" button.

Now you should be able to reach your dev site.

Sorry, no, I thought I was clearer. It is in it's OWN folder outside of the primary. We have several sites on the server and they are all in their own folders.

I cannot get access to the front or backend of Joomla. I DO have access to write or update the copy of the .htaccess file in the dev folder, which is why I asked for some sample code.

The dev url points to dev.mysite.com/dev and then everything inside is regular Joomla. Make sense?

I think it's easier if you let me connect to your site so I can review your setup. What's the dev folder you want to reach?

I have made this ticket private so that only you and me can see the information posted here.

Please provide me with the following information:

  1. The URL to your site's administrator login page
  2. Super User username and password
  3. FTP connection information

Please allow up to one business day (GMT+2 timezone) for me to log in to your site and debug this issue. When I'm done I will post back. Once the issue is fixed, you can revoke my access e.g. by changing the Super Administrator and FTP passwords.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
In order for me to help you fast and accurately, please provide the information by copying the form below, paste it into your reply and fill in the information:

----- Access Information Form -- START -----
Super Administrator access

  • URL to site's administrator page (e.g. http://www.example.com/administrator?foobar):
  • Super User username:
  • Super User password:

FTP connection information

  • FTP methods supported (e.g. FTP, FTPS, SFTP):
  • FTP Hostname:
  • FTP Username:
  • FTP Password:
  • FTP Port (if other than 21 for FTP and 22 for SFTP, ask your host):

----- Access Information Form -- END -----

Please make sure that you have tested the Super Administrator connection using a different browser or machine than the one you are using daily. Double check that logging in is possible and that the user has Super User privileges, i.e. it's not a regular Administrator. Make sure that your site does not block whole countries or IP ranges which would make it impossible for me to log in / connect by FTP. Finally, please do make sure that the FTP connection works and that logging in to it I have access to your site's files.

Kindly note that your site connection information and your site content is handled in strict confidence. Not only we are a reputable development company, we are also bound by law (EU GDPR) to do so. After you file your reply, the connection information to your site will be stored in an encrypted, hidden storage area on our site and will be automatically deleted when this ticket is closed. Finally keep in mind that the people providing support to you are the same developers who wrote the software you're using on your site.
