Judith

Hi there,

One of my clients noticed me that he was blocked from my website, www.sollicitatiehulp.org.

I asked him for his ip address and he gave me an ipv6 ip address. I used the option 'Unblock an ip'. I got the message that his ip adress had been unblocked.

But, he is still blocked from my website, with the text "I think you mean nog good......".

I can't find any ipv6 adressess in AdminTools, only ipv4, so how can I find his one?

How can he still be blocked, when I unblocked him?

Hope you can help me out. In the attachment is the screenshot of my client.

best regards, Judith

He probably has a dual stack connection, meaning that he gets BOTH an IPv4 AND an IPv6 address. When connecting to servers which support IPv6 the servers will see his IPv6 address. When connecting to servers which only support IPv4, like yours, the servers will only see his IPv4 address.

You need to ask him to provide his IPv4 address. He can get that using a site like https://www.what-is-my-ipv4.com/en

Note that if you type "what is my IP address" in a search engine the first result you get is from the search engine itself, listing the IP address you are using to connect to it. If you are on a dual stack connection they will report the IPv6 for the simple reason that all search engines have supported IPv6 for several years. I know this is confusing. Hopefully we'll get rid of IPv4 at some point in the near future, ideally before I die of old age (IPv6 was first specified in 2006 and the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is underway for over a decade)...

Hi Nicholas,

Thank you very much for your reply. I sent the link to my client and he came up with the ipv4 adress. I checked it in Admintools, but he is not on the blocked list so it is impossible to unblock him.

He says nothing changed since he tried for the first time, but of course I'm not quite sure of that, since he is not very 'handy' with IT.

Is there anything else I can do, to give him access to my site?

Best regards, Judith

If neither their IPv6 nor their IPv4 address is listed it means that they are not IP blocked. You need to get further information from them as to why they think they are blocked. If they are receiving such a message from Admin Tools (do confirm that the message they see is what you've configured in Admin Tools) it may be possible that they are trying to use the link for getting their IP address from a different network. For example, if they are blocked when using the site in their office but run the check when they are back home they will be giving you the wrong IP address. Likewise, if they are using their phone which is connected via cellular data (e.g. 4G) but they are blocked when using their computer (connected by WiFi, i.e. on a different network) they would be giving you the wrong IP address as well.
