Apologies, I am a complete newbie to Admin Tools which we recently purchased as part of the full Akeeba package.

The first problem I hit after using the Set up wizard was to constantly block myself ! I think one of the problems is that I access the internet via mobile broadband and my IP address keeps changing. Also I work from multiple locations on different IPs I keep having to user the rescue function. IT got so bad I had to uninstall admin tools. Not blaming the product. I just need some advice on how to stop it happening.

2nd Question - We take the site offline each day to do backups. We don't want people logging on during this time, But the Site offline function still allows people with registered accounts to login. Is there a function in Admin tools to stop this say via ACL???

Thanks for any advice

It sounds like you're using the Admin IP Whitelist.  That's a really cool feature - when you only access your site from a few places with fixed IP addresses

I would recommend turning that feature off - Web Application Firewall, Configure WAF, on the first tab, set "Allow administrator access only to IPs in Exclusive Allow IP List" to No.

You can secure your back end access with Password protect administrator, which will prompt you for an additional user ID and password before you get the Joomla! login scree or the Administrator secret URL parameter which "changes" the URL for your back end login screen.

Oops, missed the second question.

The Emergency offline would probably work, but it is intended for emergencies so it isn't very graceful.  Your visitors are going to get a 403 error and access to the site is limited to the IP address that turned the Emergency offline function on.

It might be better to trigger your backups via CRON job so that they can be done during a time of limited access.
