My old version of joomla3.6.5 installed Admin Tools Professional 5.2.1, and after a few days there was a warning SMTP connect() failed. https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting

I am not sure if it has anything to do with installing Admin Tools

No, this is unrelated to Admin Tools. It only has to do with the mail configuration on your site's Global Configuration.
