What is the difference between Customization / Custom Message and Auto-ban / Show this message to blocked IPs?

When does each get displayed?

Also, what is the recommended method to trigger the message n the frontend so I can show the client for approval?

They are both shown to an IP address that is locked out of the site. The auto ban message allows minor customization of the wording. The custom message will allow you to use html tags to make a more elaborate message.

It is not easy to show the messages because the IP for the computer you're on would have to be locked out. It isn't hard to lock the IP, just use a bad password enough times to meet your auto ban threshold. The problem is clearing the blocked IP address. You either have to disable Admin Tools via FTP or log in from a different IP to clear the block. That may be more than you want to show the client. A screen shot of the block message may do the job without getting into clearing the blocked IP in front of the client.

Is the only time a message is shown is when there is an attempt to log into the administration?

No, any attempted access to the site by a blocked IP, front end or back end, will show the message.

I used a proxy to trigger the message but even though I set up the template override, I am still seeing the Auto-ban message. See attached screenshots.
