Over the years a lot of Akeeba Ltd's software was using IP geolocation features through the GeoIP plugin.
As I wrote in the announcement, the only software as of December 30th, 2019 that still used the GeoIP plugin was Admin Tools. It was also an optional fallback in an optional feature of Akeeba Ticket System. As announced, the relevant features were removed from that software on January 2nd, 2020.
In the past the following software also used the GeoIP plugin:
- Akeeba LoginGuard for displaying the last place where a Two Step Verification method was used. This feature was removed in December 2018 because of GDPR compatibility concerns.
- Akeeba Release System (ARS) to show a map of downloads and the country for each download record. This feature was removed a few months ago. Moreover, ARS has stopped being available for public download since a year ago.
- Akeeba Subscriptions to automatically determine the country of a new client and display the appropriate tax information. These features were removed in Akeeba Subscriptions 7 back in April. Furthermore, also back in April 2019, Akeeba Subscriptions ceased being available for public download.
Akeeba Backup has
never used the plugin for the simple reason that it never had a use case for geographically locating users. It's backup software. It doesn't even care which server it's on, let alone which country or city the server is physically located :)
So, as far as we are concerned, you can remove the Akeeba GeoIP plugin. It's a discontinued product and we are no longer using or supporting it.
Even if you are using an older Akeeba product which required the Akeeba GeoIP plugin for IP geolocation features you will not have a problem (your site will NOT break) if you uninstall the plugin. We always checked to see if the plugin is installed. If it's not installed we simply don't call the missing IP geolocation features.
