Have been using Admin Tools for years, seamlessly.
Just tried accessing it via backend (Components -> Admin Tools), and get the following popup:

This page isn’t working
my_domain.net is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500

I'm pretty sure I accessed it a few months ago, and since then, as far as I know, nothing has changed. I've certainly not done any manual updates to anything on the site.

I have just updated my 'Admin Tools' Akeeba subscription to be able to load in the latest version of Admin tools, but wary of doing anything while I have this error.

Hello Marek,

Seeing your subscription history it looks like you were not a subscriber for about a year and a half. I assume that you downgraded Admin Tools Professional to Core. This is not supported and does cause problems due to mixing files from different Admin Tools versions.

Install Admin Tools Professional twice in a row. This will refresh all the files and get everything back in sync. This should fix your problem. If not, post back and we'll start working on other ideas.

yes, my subscription had run out in 2017 or 2018, but no I had not downgraded anything, and as I mentioned, just now got this message.

On the 'updates' page in Joomla, it still shows:
Admin Tools Professional package - 4.3.0 - advising upgrade to 5.3.0.

As I have now just renewed my subscription, should I go ahead and click the 'update', which will presumably update it to PRO 5.3.0
Not sure what you mean by 'twice in a row'.

I just want to be double sure that this will not cause any problem with the actual site itself. At moment, only issue is I can't access Admin Tools from Back end. But the site is up and seems to be behaving OK

I presume, I should take an Akeeba backup before hand, just in case?

thanks

Well, your version of Admin Tools Professional does not work correctly with Joomla! 3.8, let alone 3.9 -- it predates both by a long time. That's why it doesn't work.

Try the update from Joomla. If it does not work, download Admin Tools Professional from our site and install it twice in a row, without uninstalling Admin Tools before or in between.

Hi again
I've updated admin tools (installed twice as recommended).

I now have access to admin tools again from back end.
All my settings were retained.

One thing I've now noticed is that the "Administrator secret URL parameter" no longer seems to be working.

So before, it was not possible to use the URL my_domain/administrator in order to login backend.
If I typed the above, it would re-direct to my main site.

I had to use: my_domain/administrator/index.php?my_secret_key in order to log into back end.
Now, the site is allowing me in via the normal my_domain/administrator url.

I've checked, and the secret key is active, and I updated it, just in case.

Any ideas?

The "Administrator secret URL parameter" is most definitely working judging from all our sites (dev and production) and the daily support requests by people who have been locked out of their site because they didn't supply the secret URL parameter.

You probably have your IP address whitelisted or in the "Never block these IP addresses" list. If your IP is whitelisted no security checks take place, i.e. you are allowed to log in without supplying the secret URL parameter. I believe that you previously had an ancient version of Admin Tools that had a bug regarding whitelisted addresses, one that I fixed something like a year ago.
