Currently Joomla! 4 is in an early alpha stage and everything is changing rapidly. We will not spend any time achieving compatibility with it until after its first beta is released. If more backwards compatibility breaking changes are applied in subsequent betas or RCs we will not work on compatibility with Joomla! 4 until they release a stable.
The reason is quite simple, really. We know that we can achieve compatibility but it's a process that requires just over a week of our time during which we have to put everything else -- including support -- on hold. This has a short term but signifficant impact on our business. I am willing to take that impact once to achieve compatibility with the new major version of Joomla!. I cannot, however, take this impact over and over because of the necessary, but constant, changes during the alpha period.
My operating assumption following the discussions I had with George Wilson, the J4 release lead, is that around the first beta the architecture will be solidified and we can start working on compatibility. If they discover a major issue that requires more changes I'll have to sit that one out and resume the work after the stable (or at least a solid release candidate) is released.
FYI: I am using the first person in most of this because I am the one who'll be doing most of the compatibility work. Davide will be helping with testing what I do and replying to client tickets in the meantime.
