we have been trying to speed our website up
Www.livingwellmagazine.net
After trying jch optimize which breaks the template so we disabled it.

After reviewing our htaccess file we realized it was made over 2 years ago and thought we should let admintools update to a newer version perhaps adding newer strategies to make site secure and faster.

But now it seems the htaccess file is blocking the template so the website is not being loaded correctly. Google developer tools are confirming that it is a 403 error and it appears to be blocking the template. How do I fix this? I am not a developer but have been put in charge of fixing this.
Thanks

Be careful - if you do a job once, it's yours forever. :-)

The first step is to put the path to the template into the "Allow direct access, except .php files, to these directories" field in .htaccess Maker. The entry should be on a line by itself and simply include template/<your template name>. Where <your template name> is the folder name you can see via FTP.

If that doesn't do it, you need to check your server error log to see what exactly is throwing the 403 error and we can set up a special exception for that file.

thanks for your help but I really do not know what I am doing. I thought I did exactly what you said but I still do not have the template showing and menus etc on the front end.

I know this is a simple fix but I may not be using the correct file name I have used several variation of this but can you tell me which is correct? I am attaching log file from google. (which I only partially understand what I am looking at. BTW Dale I am in Delaware

OK, it's trying to load gzip.php from within the template folder. We didn't include php files in the exception we tried earlier. Move the template path to the next field, "Allow direct access, including .php files, to these directories".

Please let me know if that works. I think it will, but the error log didn't give the path to gzip.php. It could be outside the template path. We may also want to fine tune the exception to improve security.

okay after trying your suggestion, I finally decided to do a system restore and the problem is gone for now. But I want to use the plugin JCH Optimize but when I plug it in the website template cracks. I am guessing it has to do with the htaccess. does anyone know a simple fix so I can get the website up running faster with out a huge code learning curve.

dlb
OK, now I'm starting to get it. JCH Optimize is a third party plugin, not part of your template?

I was trying to set up exemptions on the template. That's "right church, wrong pew." We need to find the gzip.php file within JCH Optimize. We don't know what folder it's in and we need that information to fix it. You might be able to extract the extension to your local computer and search for it and find the folder that way. You may be able to just "eyeball" it via FTP. The slowest, but surest, way would be to ask the extension author.

Dale,
JCH Optimize is a plugin. can help optimize site for example render block, scrripts lazy load etc. But when I enable it it breaks the template.. I also use sef404 but that seems to be fine.. I am sure it has to do with with the htaccess . i can get the file there if i know what I am looking for.
A lot of the gzp.php files were not loading, before according to developer tools. I can figure my way around some of this, but I don't understand exactly how it works..

dlb
What we want to do is "Allow direct access to these php files" in .htaccess Maker. But we need to know the path for gzip.php in order to do that. It should be in the JCH Optimize path somewhere, but I don't know where exactly.
