Hi, good evening!

I have a 500 Internal Server Error on the backend of a site - I checked the other threads and was able to find the error in the server log. I made the site in a subfolder, named "/joom387/" and switched the site this morning to the root of the server.... and that's what's giving the error now:

[Wed Jun 06 18:27:41.329906 2018] [error] [pid 14199] mod_authn_file.c(78): (2)No such file or directory: [client 79.146.217.46:64011] AH01620: Could not open password file: /data/sites/web/websitename/www/joom-387/administrator/.htpasswd -->> the problem is that the name of the subfolder is still appearing...

my question now is: where/how can I correct this?...

Many thanks in advance!
best regards,
Isabel

Delete the .htaccess and .htpasswd files from the administrator folder. Then use the Password Protect Administrator feature to re-apply the password protection.

If you are also using Admin Tools' .htaccess maker you may also need to delete the .htaccess from your site's root, go to Admin Tools, .htaccess Maker, change the hostname and directory at the bottom of the page to reflect where your site is located now, then click on Save and Create .htaccess to apply the changes.

Good morning Nicholas,

thanks for the answer!... However, yesterday when I read the threads, I also read one about deleting the .htaccess and .htpasswd files from the administrator folder, but... when I check there are no .htaccess or .htpasswd files in the administrator folder (see screenshots attached).

I cannot find them in:
/administrator, nor in
/administrator/components, and not in
/administrator/components/com_admintools or /administrator/components/com_akeeba

..help?!..

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Nicholas,

you can close this thread, I solved it (it was too easy :P)

I just put all the files back in the subfolder (joom-387), than I could enter the backend of the site - removed the Admintools password protection, and placed everything back in the root folder... worked as a charm :)

Now I can enter the admin area (in the definite site) and apply the Admin password protection again.

Thanks & have a nice day!

The reason why you cannot see .htaccess and .htpasswd is that they are dot-files, i.e. their name starts with a dot. These files are hidden by default on Linux and generally all operating systems except Windows. Remember that when you are connecting to your site with FTP or SFTP it's the remote server (running on Linux) which creates the file list. Moreover, when you are using your host's control panel file manager it's also the remote server (running on Linux) which creates the file list. Therefore they do not show you these hidden files.

Most FTP/SFTP programmes have a "Show hidden files" option. You need to use that to see these two files.

If you are using your host's control panel you should check with your host. cPanel, for example, gives you the option to show hidden files before it displays the file manager. Other control panel software may work a bit differently. That's why you need to check with your host.

Of course removing the protection through Admin Tools always works :)
