I can change the generator tag using Web Application Firewall->Configure Waf->Visual Fingerprinting, but if I set "Hide/customise generator meta tag" to Yes and leave the "Generator tag" field empty, MYOB is shown as the generator.

Is it possible to completely remove the generator tag?

Hello,

it's not possible to completely remove the generator tag, since Joomla removed such option.
However, what Joomla let us to do is to replace the contents of the generator to something customized.

For you your information, completely removing the generator tag requires to run an expensive regular expression on the whole HTML page, which will slow down your site. Changing the generator is enough to protect you from some web scraping: basic attacks will query for Joomla generator.

To avoid any misunderstanding we're going to change the label for that option to "Customise generator meta tag"

Thanks for your reply, Davide.

I've found that the following code, placed in index.php, removes the generator tag completely. I'm using Joomla 3.8.2 and a custom template. Do you have any thoughts on this?

$document = &JFactory::getDocument();
$document->setGenerator('');

Thanks again,
Justin

Thanks for the hint, we will take a look into.
We will have to double check that such feature works consistently between all supported versions of Joomla (from 3.4 to 4.0).
