We installed admin tools on our main site and our subsite. We cannot gain access to the subsite though. The admin panel is not visible at all

Hello,

what's the name of the subsite? Is it inside a folder in the root of the site?
You'll have to add that folder inside the Htaccess Maker exceptions, in the field Allow direct access, including .php files, to these directories. You can find more info here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/admin-tools/server-protection.html

Thanks for the info.

The site in question is not really a subsite, I made a mistake.

It's one of our sites on our server. We do not remember adding admin tools to it, but I guess we must have.

We have a few subsites on our domain (nohoartsdistrict.com) and these have not been affected.

How can we remove the admin tools from laculturalexchange.com without access through admin?

Please replace your current .htaccess file with Joomla default one, then follow these steps to disable Admin Tools System plugin.
Finally, take a look at the administrator folder: if there is a .htaccess AND a .htpasswd file, delete them.
