I logged into Joomla because I received several emails that I needed to update to Joomla 3.8.

It first did a Backup and it started to install Joomla but I got something Error loading Ajax, and then I cannot login! I am just getting a blank white screen.

I tried to disable the Admin tools and that didn't work, then I changed it back to "normal" again.

I am sorry, but I don't know which PHP version I am using and I don't remember which version of Admin Tools I am using!

I hope you have a solution for me!

Thanks,
Britt

Britt,

This isn't an Admin Tools problem. You pretty much proved that when you disabled Admin Tools and still had the problem.

First, clear your browser cache or use an incognito window. If the old Joomla! files are cached, that can cause a white screen error. That's pretty common with Joomla! upgrades.

If that doesn't work, I'm afraid you have a partial upgrade. You will need to ask for solutions in the Joomla! forums since that is beyond our support area.

Thanks for your quick reply!

A backup was done before I started the 3.8 upgrade. What will happen if I restore from the backup, do I have to be logged in to do that? Or what happens if I upgrade directly from the server, can the problem go away?

I am sorry, but I don't understand this!

Thanks,
Britt

You can restore your pre-upgrade backup and you will be back on Joomla! 3.7.

The catch is you can't restore a 3.7 backup over a 3.8 system, which is what you have now. You have to delete all the files before you do the restore. This type of restore couldn't be done from the Administer Backups page even if you could get to it. It is a special case when you have multiple major versions of Joomla! involved.

Paranoia is your friend. Log in to your site via FTP and download the pre-update backup archive. If it is in multiple parts, make sure you get all the parts. While you're there, download any other backups that you haven't already. We are about to delete them. Store the backups in one or more safe place(s) and do not use your only copy to restore the site. Did I mention that paranoia is your friend?

Next delete all the files from your site using FTP or cPanel (faster). Then drop the tables. This last is probably not necessary but I always do it when I'm restoring to a clean site.

Then upload your backup archive and kickstart.php to the root of your site and execute kickstart.php.
