I am trying to update a development site but can not get in the admin after an update. My live site rainbowrv.com has admin tools where it askes for a pre password when going to the admin. But the last copy of the live site that was placed on the .org development site did not have the extra admin password enabled. I can not get it to ask for a pre password when going to the admin and I am also locked out of going to the front end. I can see that I get logged into the front end but it looks like I am a guest looking at the site with user's.
to update I took a copy of the site placed it in the root with a kickstart and updated . via front end just renaming the database. I will try and erase all the files and do a rewrite again

Admin issue: delete the .htaccess and .htpasswd files from the administrator folder. Do not touch the .htaccess file in your site's root.

Login issue: when restoring the site you have a few fields that you need to pay attention to.
  • The Live Site should normally be left empty. If your dev site doesn't work you want to fill in the exact URL you are using with your site, e.g. http://www.example.com You must use the correct protocol (http or https) and the correct subdomain (e.g. with www). You will ONLY be able to access the site if both the protocol and exact subdomain match. In the example above you can NOT access the site correctly as https://www.example.com or as http://www.example.com.
  • There are two fields for the cookie domain and path. Normally they should be left empty. On some servers Joomla! cannot identify the domain and path correctly so you need to enter the values matching your development site. If your site is http://www.example.com/joomla then the domain is www.example.com (no protocol; pay attention to the subdomain just like above) and the path is /joomla Please remember that if the cookie domain is set to www.example.com you will NOT be able to access your site as a logged in user if you are accessing it as example.com (without the www).

So, based on the above I assume that you are accessing your dev site without www but the cookie settings OR the live site (which is the fallback when the cookies settings are blank) are set up for a domain name with the www subdomain (or vice versa). So you are logging in, a cookie is created but since it's for the wrong subdomain Joomla! doesn't see it and tells you that you are not logged in. This is how it is supposed to work, cookies are the only way sites have to persist information during (and across) a browsing session. If the cookie ends up being set up incorrectly your site cannot see the information which lets it know that you have logged in. Therefore, you are a guest.

Cool, Thanks for the quick reply. I was not ever able to get into the back end so I deleted all the files and used kickstart to set up another instance of a prior copy. It all worked fine and I am able to get into the admin using the unique rainbowrv.org/administrator/index.php?mysecreteterm but the extra password prompt did not show up. I thought this copy was prior to admin tools being deployed but I guess not. in the admin tool section there is a warning message.
Invalid Joomla Configuration settings detected

"Invalid or unwritable Joomla log directory. Please fix it inside Joomla Global Configuration before continuing using Admin Tools."

is this looking for the two files? .htaccess and .htpasswd ??

I will try and make a new copy work with the same procedures I love being comfortable with doing a kickstart new instance when all else fails. Your tool is the best

Ok all is good. It sees that I DID NOT enter Live site details properly. Great news is I messed with all the optional way of restoring a site and doing a restore from the admin by uploading a copy ftp and finding it in the admin with your tool. So glad that you are a constant with the Joomla project. A great product and wonderful team
Thanks a bunch.

but the extra password prompt did not show up

This is correct. We deleted the .htaccess and .htpasswd from the administrator folder to remove that feature since it was causing your web server, Apache, to choke. You can try using the Password Protect Administrator feature of Admin Tools again to create a new set of .htaccess and .htpasswd files appropriate for your server. If the problem happens again remove these files once more and ask your host if they allow you to password protect directories using .htaccess files.

Absolutely nothing to do with the previous fix. It is what it says it is. The setting for the "Temp-directory" in Joomla!'s "Global Configuration" page points to a directory which cannot be written to by your site, therefore your site won't work. There should be a button under that message proposing to fix it for you. Have you tried it?
