When Joomla released 3.6.3 the two factor authentication was broken. With a number of other sites, I have been able to disable AdminTools and rename the twofactor file in order to login and update joomla to ver 3.6.4 (now 3.6.5) and reset admintools and twofactorauth.

I missed updating two websites and I am trying to once again login and update joomla. Fist I launched my FTP app, login to the site disabled the plugins/system/admintools/admintools/main.php file to main-disable.php

Next I disabled the two-factor auth by renaming the /net/plugins/twofactorauth/totp file to totp-disable.

Next I launched a web browser and typed in the www.website.com/adminstrator and the browser launched the admintool user name and password. In the previous upgrades, I was sent directly to the normal joomla user name/password login.

I have also eliminated (saved to harddrive) the .htaccess and .htaccess.admintools files in the root directory thinking they were the problem. Still no luck.

Your help would be appreciated.

You told me what you did, but you didn't tell me what is wrong. If you are getting an extra user and password prompt before you get the Joomla! back end login screen, that is triggered by htaccess and .htpasswd files in the /administrator folder (NOT the root). You can delete or rename them to disable it.

If I guessed wrong, just tell me what is keeping you out and I'll try to help you beat it into submission.

Sorry Dale:

Yes, I am getting the Admintools user name and password login before the joomla user name and login show up. I will follow your directions and rename them from the administrator folder.

Dale:

Once again you have shown your brilliance and expertise. I can now login to the back end.

Thanks.
