I was trying to update a number of joomla servers on one account. Everytime I use the Akeeba firewall user name and password it successfully takes me to the Joomla standard login with User name, password, and secret key.

When I enter all three, correctly I get the following error message. "An error has occurred. 0 Must match character set. Return to control Panel.

It looks like the secret key is the problem. Is there a way to disable the two-way authenticator from the FTP login?

Your help would be appreciated.

dlb
I'm a little confused. The Secret URL Parameter and the Two Factor Authentication are two different things. You can disable the secret parameter via FTP with the instructions here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/atwafissues.html.

Joomla!'s two factor authentication is broken in 3.6.3. They have announced, but have not released, version 3.6.4.

This is the first time I have heard this. Any suggestions on how to correct the problem with version 3.6.3? How do you disable the two factor authentication if you only have FTP access?

dlb
The official answer is "You have to go to the Joomla! forums and ask there."

But you might rename the /plugins/twofactorauth/totp folder while you are waiting for an answer.

Dale:

Thanks for the help. Changing the folder name worked. it's times like this that I love having full paid up support to Akeeba. Thanks.

I hope that when ver. 3.6.4 comes out it is just a matter of installing it and the two way will start working again.

I don't know when they plan on releasing 3.6.4, but they usually don't do "Previews of coming attractions" on the website so my guess would be soon. It is my understanding that it will fix two factor authentication.

You need to disable two factor within Joomla! and THEN rename the folder back so you're all set for when 3.6.4 is released. If it was me I'd forget I renamed it and then spend gobs of time trying to figure out why it wouldn't work. :-)
