Hi, I've got a website that when I log in to the administrator side of my website, I dont get my pop-up box asking for my developers credentials (the one that admin tools produces). This is not because I just upgraded my joomla version and my admin tools version, it is been doing this for some time. I thought i would just rerun the quick wizard to see if it fixes it but now I get a big disclaimer that says not to do this. I am not a very knowledgeable user. What do you recommend I should do?

thanks for your help,
Jonathan

Jonathan,

The problem with the wizard in this case is that it will do much more than just re-establish your password protection. You can use the Password Protect Administrator option in the top section to get your password back without affecting any other settings.

Hi, I didnt loose my password or did I loose the access to the backend, I can easily go to my backend, too easily in fact. On the other sites that I have admin tools installed, I get the normal joomla administrator login screen and when I enter those, I usually get a small pop-up box with extra credentials (created by admin tools) I dont get this pop-up box on this particular site, I want this security back, can you help me out?

Hi, i think i understand what you were trying to tell me, were talking about the same thing right? I just connected to another website that the pop-up works and I saw the added button "remove password protection" so if this button is not there on the site that doesnt show this pop-up box, i can assume that this feature was not activated right?

dlb
Yes, I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same thing. If three is no Password Protect Administrator option in the top section of Admin Tools you may have the Core version installed instead of the Pro version. Yes, the option toggles between add and remove based on whether or not it is active.

Hi, yes I have the pro version (the password protect administraor option is there) I guess i must have forgot to enter it when I was doing my initial quick wizard. Is there a way to make sure the protection is working the way it should be? like I said, I'm not a knowledgeable user, that is why I jumped and love the new quick wizard option. Also, is this a bad decision to have google chrome remember my passwords?

dlb
You can use the Wizard again. But it will change your secret URL parameter as well as the administrator folder password. Those are the only settings that I can think of that would change to new, random values.

If the browser remembers the password then anyone with physical access to your computer will blow right through your security (says the guy with his YubiKey hanging out of a usb port on his computer). I see programs all the time that supposedly "recover" passwords from browsers so I don't entirely trust the browser to keep the password. Security is not black and white, it is shades of gray. You need to balance safety with convenience. How safe do you want to be and how likely is it that someone can access that password stored in the browser? There is no one right answer.
