Hi,
I have this notice in my Admintoiols.
Invalid Joomla Configuration settings detected
Invalid or unwritable Joomla log directory. Please fix it inside Joomla Global Configuration before continuing using Admin Tools.
What do I need to do next.
Regards,

Hi ,

I just noticed this in System Information:
Database Collation is latin1_swedish_ci
It should be utf8_unicode_ci
How can I change it to what it should be?

Regards,
Nev

In Joomla!'s Global Configuration, the setting for the log folder is not writable. You need to change that setting to a writable folder.

What is currently in that field?

You can not change the database collation from within Admin Tools. Your host may be able to help you change the collation, or you can back up the site, create a new database with the proper collation and restore the site. It is usually easier to get your host to do it.

Hi,

Many thanks for your reply.

Re Global Config Settings
I set the correct path in Global Config but the warning is still showing in Admin tools.
I think the problem arose when I reloaded the site to a folder with a modified name (for security as the replacement backup was taking a long time to upload) and then changed its name back to what it should be.
I'm thinking of reloading the site.

Re Collation
I also found a Change Database Collation feature in Admintools. It recommends UTF 8 Multibyte.
I'm considering applying it. Will it create any issues if I do?

Re Global Config Settings
Be careful of caches. If your browser cache or site cache still has the old values, it can take a while for the cache to expire and the new, on disk, values to be loaded. Try again in the morning.

Re Collation
(sigh) It can be very difficult to keep up with Nicholas sometimes. I remember him taking that feature out of Admin Tools. I remember him telling a client to backup and restore to change the collation. I'm not crazy, I remember. Evidently there was some resistance to the removal of the feature. (Picture a crowd with pitchforks and torches trampling Nicholas' flowerbeds, scaring the cat, chanting "Death to Frankenstein!", etc.) He evidently put it back in. Yes, that is the way to change the collation.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for your comprehensive reply.

Re: cache . As I discovered in the morning :)

Re Collation. Is it entirely safe to use the collation feature and; what are the benefits of UTF 8 multibyte as opposed to utf8_unicode?

Many thanks in advance!

It's best to use utf8_general_ci for now. Multibyte support will be added in Joomla! 3.5.0 which is going to be released sometime in March. FWIW, UTF8MB4 (multibyte) support mitigates some potential security issues. Remember the massive issue that hit Joomla! in December the week before Christmas? It would be impossible to exploit had Joomla! already used multibyte support: the attack hinged on MySQL truncating data after the first four byte character because plain utf8 (instead of multibyte) was being used. There are other more esoteric security issues which can occur when multibyte support isn't used but 9 months into looking into it several of us were not able to provide a viable exploit in Joomla!.

I'll let Dale resume handling of this ticket :)
