Yes, you can, by turning on the (mislabeled) "Set default expiration time to 1 hour" option. This in fact sets expiration headers into the future for static media types. The future expiration header is what Google calls "leverage browser caching" in their interface and documentation.

Please note that this option does NOT work for the HTML content generated by Joomla!. You will need to enable the System - Page Cache plugin that ships with Joomla! itself and set its "Use Browser Caching" to Yes. Please refer to the official Joomla! documentation and the Joomla! forum for more information about this plugin.

Finally, please note that the .htaccess Maker header related options only apply to the Apache web server. We've seen a few hosts, including SiteGround, who put an NginX server or another reverse proxy in front of Apache. Unfortunately this kind of setup overrides the headers set by Apache making the .htaccess Maker options (and any .htaccess code you'd manually apply to set the expiration headers) effectively useless.
