I have recently created a new .htaccess file using the instructions in the documentation. I specifically set all the options to no and began to make the file incrementally by turning options on and testing the results, and when I encountered a problem I turned oft that option and retested. After creating this file I have had two instances of the same strange event.
When I try to access the frontend (homepage) I get a dialogue box asking me what I would like to do with a rss/xml file that wants to be downloaded. When I download the file it contains the code for the homepage such as I would expect when I select view source in Chrome or Firefox. If this does not occur all I get is the raw code.
The first time I encountered the problem I thought I had been hacked but I looked through the file directory in the Cpanel and did not find any suspicious files or dated stamps. I reverted to a previous backup which resolved the issue. The second time I went a way for about 30 minutes and when I tried again the site had rectified itself. Could this be a .htaccess setting and if so can you give me some indication which one it could be? If it isn't please let me know.
I have another website in the same webspace and during these timeouts it works fine so I suspect my new htaccess file but I am no expert.
Regards,
Brian
