Sorry I am new to joomla and admin tools and php (but not html or web design)

Have just installed Admin Tools Pro and following your instructions for update ID, which was straightforward enough, thank you.

I am stuck on the part following that, on the Joomla control panel page on the secondmost heading on the top row next to the joomla update one etc... to clear the cache... ???

I think I understand the principle of what and why but cannot find what I think are correct or appropriate buttons or tabs or icons that match the description or place.

The Components tab, it shows Admin Tools requires a Missing Geo IP plugin - so perhaps this suggests that the ID is working correctly?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Robin,

I can't figure out exactly where you are reading in the instructions but I think it is telling you to clear the update cache to check for a new version of Admin Tools. If you have 3.5.1 installed, that is not necessary and the cache will clear and update on its own.

The GeoIP plugin is an optional third party plugin that needs to be downloaded separately from the main component. It tries to determine where a visitor is located based on their IP address. Note that this is pretty easy to spoof by logging in through a proxy server in another country. This does not use the Download ID.

Hi Dale
Thanks for your fast response. The instructions are listed in Instructions under My Account. The relevant part, after installing the Update ID reads...

>Important! You now need to reset the update cache for the component to see the updated Download ID. Click on the button next to the Joomla! update status one (the second on the topmost row in the main control panel area). Depending on your update status it may read "Up to date", "UPDATE FOUND" or "Live Update is not supported". No matter what it reads, click on it. On the new page, please click on the "Refresh update information" button.

>That's it! From now on, whenever a new release is published, you can simply click on the the "UPDATE FOUND" icon on your Admin Tools Control Panel page and then on "Install update" to upgrade your copy of Admin Tools Professional to the latest release.

Does this fit with just checking for a new version of Admin Tools?

I have installed the GeoIP plugin OK, sounds a useful thing to have! Have yet to enable it as I have yet to find out how to do that.

Thanks Robin

Dale

Further to my post just now, I have found where to enable the GeoIP plugin.
There are two other Admin Tool plugins there, both disabled. Admin Tools Joomla update email, and Admin Tools Update Email. Both are v1.0 with 2011 dates. Should they be enabled? Though I am about to work my way through the online documentation to set up Admin Tools and might find it listed there.

Robin,

Now I get it! I was looking in the Admin Tools documentation.

On the Admin Tools Control Panel page, there is a black button on the right side. That will update the cache and check for a new version. It is confusing because Nicholas is trying to cover all the possibilities that you might see in different versions. Just click on the black button and you are good to go.

Those two plugins will send you emails for an Admin Tools update or a Joomla! update. They are not nearly as useful now with the 3.4 version as they were back in the 2.5 days. Now that all the updates are centralized the email is not really necessary.

Hi Dale, thanks. Those are both really helpful answers. For whatever reason I was looking in the Joomla control panel page!

If it's OK, one more question. Components>Admin Tools, the browser tab reads

".... Admin Tools Professional <small>3.5.1</small>"

I hope it is just a typo in the coding of the page and not a symptom of something else amiss. I don't see it on other tabs.

Thanks again
Robin

LOL I never noticed it. I'll flag this for Nicholas, thank you for the report.

One more thing, since the support page will shut down for the weekend pretty soon. If you get yourself locked out of your Admin area because of Admin Tools, the instructions to fix it are here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/atwafissues.html.

Unfortunately not much we can do about it :( Joomla! uses the displayed title verbatim as the HTML title tag's contents. If we remove the <small> tag the text is too long for smaller screens (think: tablets). We'd have to take out the component name out. Back in Joomla! 1.5 that was acceptable, since you had a pretty, component-specific icon to the left of the title indicating the component you're in. In Joomla! 3 you don't. If we remove the component name you end up with nondescript page titles that are very confusing.

In the end of the day we have to opt for the lesser evil. The lesser evil is using the <small> tag. Browsers have become VERY effective at hiding the page title as communicated by the title tag and equally effective at displaying the page title in the page content.
