 Hi I have just uploaded today latest Akeeba Pro, Admin Tools and CMS Update to a joomla 3.3.6 site and another joomla 2.5.20 site.
I have read documentation and have backed up both sites and basic configured Admin Tools but before I do anything more I thought using CMS Update might be good first move. I have googled and read this forum and wonder if-
- CMS Updater works seemlessly on joomla 2.5.20
even though it installed nicely and everything is green successfully installed
will it update my joomla site? Do I need to update it as it is working perfectly? I have a heavily customised template will it effect it? Is it worth it? I understand it is important to keep joomla up-to-date for security reasons does this mean I have to update 2.5.20 to 3 point something latest or even version 4 one day?

- Will CMS Updater or Admin tools help update my heavily customised joomla 3.3.6 site ?

and can I set either of CMS or Admin Tools to automatic update or would you advise against this due to customisations. Most are in over-ride but I worry some are not and I am not experienced enough to follow slightly advanced dev instructions.

My server seems to be very up-to-date with latest versions of PHP etc
any advise appreciated

You do want to keep your Joomla! site up to date. I understand that 3.4.1 is right around the corner and I'm waiting for that for most of my sites.

With a heavily customized site, you run a greater risk of something going wrong with an update. You should do a test update first to try to get some feel for what you are going to go through with your live site. I would recommend setting up a local server with a WAMP, MAMP or LAMP package and do a test upgrade on the local server.

CMS Update will upgrade your 2.5.x site up to the 3.3 or 3.4 series. It allows you to do a backup prior to the upgrade. Basically you will end up at the same place you would if you used the Joomla! upgrade.
