 Hi Guys,

I need some clarity and then some help... :)

Okay so I have a Joomla! site for my client running AT - all good and well, this site in on root level at the moment. Now I've built him a new addition to his business and Online Shop - also on Joomla! It would be great if google could index this separately/ kind of from the main site... But the client doesnt want a complete departure from the current domain name.

So I was thinking Subdomain. Through Cpanel. I've created it a few times now and have issues with the new site not displaying its subpages correctly... So then I read a few of the posts and trawled the web looking for answers, I see you dont recommend keeping the subdirectory for the subdomain as a child folder in the main public_html/ so I tried rearranging it and moved it out completely along with editing the subdomain folder in Cpanel from public_html/shop to eith just shop/ or shoppublic_html/ but seems that that didnt fix it...

Then I saw maybe I need to keep /public_html/shop and move the main site as a peer into maybe public_html/mainsite which I tried but had problems with the url in the address bar showing xyz.com/mainsite I read a few other bits about domain redirects and other edits to htacess... But my concern is that without knowing what is good and what is bad I'm just going to have a crows-nest of code here and there...

so now you know my problem, where do I start? What would be the best route? keeping in mind I dont want to compromise the mainsites google ranking and sitelinks.

I appreciate your help :)

Create a new subdomain. When you are asked which directory to place it in select a NEW directory ABOVE the public_html directory and you will have no problems. If you are unsure how to do that please consult with your host.

Assuming subdomain directory name "sub_html"

CORRECT directory layout:
(your account)
   |
   +-- public_html
   |
   +-- sub_html
   |
   ...

INCORRECT directory layout:
(your account)
   |
   +-- public_html
   | |
   | +-- sub_html
   |
   ...

Hiya Nic,

Okay man so I've followed the instructions, I have the site in a folder outside of the public_html its now at the same level:

http://shop.transportandconstruction.co.za/

in a folder called shop, now the problem I have is still the same - if I click on a product listing or for example "airbrakes" category - the next page is buggered.

OK, you made the first, big step. Now let's get down to the details of the subdomain site.

You're using .htaccess Maker, correct and you transferred the site with Akeeba Backup (or any other backup tool), correct? Go to Admin Tools, .htaccess Maker. Scroll all the way down. Make sure the HTTP and HTTPS domains and the directory are correct. The domains should read
shop.transportandconstruction.co.za
and the directory should read
/
Remember to click on Save & Close after any change.

Hi Nic,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Okay so I've installed AT pro on this subdomain and gone down to the htaccess maker bottom to set the http and https as you outline, plus the directory as /

Saved the new htaccess file and closed. Open the site - and click on the link... but still have the same result... Perhaps I can send you a login for the site to have a look around?

You need to contact your host or, if they cannot help you, the Joomla! Forum. We cannot provide generic Joomla! support. It is outside the scope of the services we provide.

Sure Nic no worries... I reckon it is a hosting issue on 500 errors - maybe the server not capable of both sites... anyways - thank you for your help.

My guess is that they either don't have Apache's mod_rewrite enabled OR they have a very old version of Apache (1.3?) which may have a problem with the newer .htaccess SEF rules applied since Joomla! 3.3 and also used by Admin Tools' .htaccess Maker.
