 Hello,

I have tried to update both Admin Tools Pro and Akeeba Backup Pro to the latest versions 2.6.2 and 3.10.2 on 3 different joomla sites, all of them have the same system info I plugged into the support form above and all of them have similar issues explained below.

The first site I tried upgrading your components on I used the one-click email to try and perform the update and got a 500 internal server error after attempting the upgrade. I had to refresh twice to get back to the extension manager only to find the upgrade did not occur? I then had to manually download the current versions from your website, upload and install the upgrade; which still gave me the 500 internal server error but after refreshing the browser a couple times the upgrade was made. However, I keep getting warning messages that the update plugin is obsolete and will disable itself. And another warning that said to disable the plugin to make the message go away?

So I went to the plugins manager and found two slightly different plugins, one labeled "System - Admin Tools Joomla! Update Email" and the other labeled " System - Admin Tools Update Email". The plugin labeled "System - Admin Tools Update Email" was disabled but the other one was not. I tried disabling both of them, yet the warnings persist? I tried clearing my browser cache, clearing the joomla cache, disabled the hosting cache yet the warnings persist? The only way to get them to go away is to turn debugging to none instead of system default?

As I mentioned I tried this on 3 sites all on different host accounts, the next one I tried the upgrades on I logged in and clicked on the "Upgrade" link in each component, yet still got the 500 internal server error and persistent issues mentioned above?

On the last site I tried the upgrades on I tried uploading and installing the upgrades manually right from the start and still got the same results as above with a 500 internal server error and then the persistent warning messages even after disabling both plugins.

I have a several more sites to upgrade and could use some advise as to what is going on and how I can avoid all these issues? I am wondering why the upgrades are kicking out 500 internal server error messages? Why the warning messages will not go away? And also, I am slightly confused as to if I am supposed to have the plugin labeled "System - Admin Tools Joomla! Update Email" enabled or not? It is confusing having both plugins so similar in name and understanding which one or if both should be discarded?

Thank you for your time!

Receiving a blank page after installing the latest versions of Akeeba Backup, Admin Tools, Akeeba Ticket System, DocImport or Akeeba Release System using Live Update (the update button found inside each component's control panel page) is normal and does not indicate an error.

As described in the change logs of these components, the versions released since March 2014 no longer make use of Akeeba Live Update. Due to popular request all of our software is now making use of Joomla!'s own extensions update feature. In the future you will find the updates to our software in Extensions, Manage Extensions, Update. Joomla! itself will be responsible for discovering, downloading and installing the updates. Our extensions update code (Akeeba Live Update) has been removed from all of our components.

This is the reason you are receiving a blank page. Since you made an update using Live Update, after the update was complete it tried redirecting back to itself. However it was already removed in the updated version, hence the blank page. This is not an error. Your update has been installed just fine. You can verify it by logging back in to your site's administrator page and visiting the component's main page. You will see that our component functions just fine and is, in fact, upgraded to the latest release.

If for any reason the update did network, please consult our documentation which contains detailed instructions for alternative update methods. Cutting a long story short, installing the latest version on top of the old one but without uninstalling the old version will perform an update.

We apologies for the confusion caused by the blank page. Unfortunately it was a bit of a Catch-22 situation for us. If we included Live Update in those releases the same problem would occur in the next version that would not have live update, plus some other interesting update issues (Live Update would report an update available if you used Joomla!'s extensions updater and vice versa). Removing it causes a blank page. Not using Joomla!'s own updater caused distress to many users. Every solution was a bad one. We chose the one that will be the best in the long run.

Clarification: White page, error 500 and error 400 are all manifestations of the exact same issue. The actual symptom you get depends on your site/server setup and which one of our components you are trying to upgrade. What is written here applies to your case.

Clarification 2: The "System - Admin Tools Joomla! Update Email" is supposed to be enabled if you want to receive update emails for Joomla! itself. It has NOT been replaced. Only the "System - Admin Tools Update Email" which used to send update emails about Admin Tools itself is obsolete. If the plugin is removed and you still receive the message please try logging out and back in. Joomla! seems to be slightly broken with regards to the application message queue.
