Hello, 

I keep getting security exemptions /?tmpl=unsupported. What is that exactly?
Reading through other posts. Suggests I should place unsupported in the
List of allowed tmpl= keywords, is that correct?

That is correct. Your template has a special page that is displayed to users with antique browsers. That special page requires that tmpl=unsupported exception.
