 seem the joomla update option is now gone from akeeba admin pro. I wanted to "reupdate" and can't find that option anywhere,

You can enable the plugin Quick Icon - Joomla! Update Notification, that is the Joomla! version of the update notification. It is an updated version of what used to be in Admin Tools, Nicolas donated the code to the Joomla! project.

Nicholas also released a new CMS Update program a few days ago. You can find it at https://www.akeebabackup.com/downloads/cmsupdate.html. I have to confess that I have not had a chance to play with it yet.

The update plugin is already activated though I will check the cmsupdate out. Strange though that a core feature of admin tools is missing

I'm sorry, it is not missing, it was removed from Admin Tools. There were things Nicholas could do with it as built in to Joomla!'s core that he couldn't do in Admin Tools. There were also changes to how Joomla! does updates that were difficult to integrate into the Admin Tools version. There was also the issue of maintaining the same code in two different places. For all of those reasons it was moved from Admin Tools into the Joomla! core.
