Please read https://www.akeebabackup.com/home/news/55-general/1525-joompa-2512-312-updates.html The backup before update feature was added to Akeeba Backup 3.8.2 which has been around for well over a month.

I have the latest versions of Backup and tools and (now) Joomla. But I can't find the backup before update feature. No restorepoint or backup was made before the update.
Must I reactivate this option?

You are asked when you install Akeeba Backup. Alternatively you can manually enabled the plugin "System - Backup on update". When you try to update Joomla! using the built-in Joomla! Update component Akeeba Backup will kick in and take a backup of your site. I've used that with all of my sites, both the live and the test / development ones.

Must have been turned off after an update. I always used this option and now it is turned of at all my sites.
But then I will turn it on again.
But if this is a change in the program then why not the safe option and turn it on by default?

I think you are a little confused and skipped a step after upgrading.

In the past the backup before update was only possible if you would use Admin Tools' Joomla! Update feature. It wasn't a plugin. On the downside you could not use Joomla! Update to update your site if you wanted a backup. That was a stupid decision on my part because you needed two of my extensions (Akeeba Backup and Admin Tools) to update your site.

When I removed the update feature from Admin Tools I added the backup before update feature to Akeeba Backup. There it is implemented as a system plugin and works with Joomla! Update. Since this is a new feature in Akeeba Backup the new plugin is disabled by default. After the update you must go to Components, Akeeba Backup. This displays the Post-Installation page which asks you to enable this new plugin. It's up to you to decide if you want to accept the default and enable the plugin, or if you want to disable it. But you must go through that page and press the Apply Settings button. The trick is that by pressing the button you are simultaneously accepting responsibility of enabling this feature. Apparently you didn't do that step on your sites.

OK I must have missed that step somehow. I tried to find this change in the release notes but couldn't find the explanation.
I will see what happens next time when I update Joomla! or Akeeba, but maybe I liked (trusted) the old way more.

The new way is actually more reliable :) If you do find a bug in the core Joomla! Update component please let me know. I am its maintainer, it's my job to fix it if it's broken.
