Joomla! version: (2.5.14)
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)

Admin Tools version: (prof)

Description of my issue:

I protected my administrator back-end with a password.
Later I decided to delet the .htaccess and .htpassword via ftp.
But now the backend still asks me for a password - no password matches.
How can I eliminate this protection, there is no .htaccess and no .htpassword in administrator - I also tryed to overwrite these files with empty ones.

OK, I don't really think this is the issue, but I'd be really embarrassed later on if it was and I didn't ask. These are hidden files we're talking about and your FTP client would have to be set to view hidden files for them to be visible.

Some hosts (GoDaddy) cache their .htaccess files and it can take up to an hour for changes to the files to be effective.

You can rename the .htaccess file in the root of the site, but I'm pretty sure that is not where the admin password protection is stored, it should be in the /administration folder.

The ftp client lets me see the .htaccess.
I deleted the .htaccess and the .htpassword in /administrator. And I overwrote these files with empty ones.
I deleted also the .htaccess in root directory.
I emtyed the caches of my joomla-installation and of my browser.
And I took an older mysql-database for testing.

But I'm still asked for the password.

What you are describing is not possible. I will ask Nicholas what I'm missing.

Dale is correct, what you describe is outright impossible. If the .htaccess and .htpasswd files are removed, renamed or overwritten with blank files they no longer take any effect on your site. Please contact your host. I am quite sure you have used a host-specific tool to password protect your administrator directory.

I'm sorry, but it is like I told you.
After reinstallation of an older backup of the site, the password-protection was deleted (I wasn't asked anymore for the password).
But than I installed again the pro-version of the admin-tools - and again ... password.
This means, there must be something in the database - isn't it??????

No. The administrator password protection runs very long before PHP loads. It is a server level feature which runs through .htaccess and .htpasswd files. That said, I start suspecting that what you are calling a password is not the password protection. Can you please provide a screenshot?
