Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter? βœ”
Have I searched the tickets before posting? βœ”
Have I read the documentation before posting? βœ”
Joomla! version: 2.5
PHP version: 5.3.2
MySQL version: 5.1.44
Host: MAMP, Apache
Admin Tools version: 2.3.2 pro

There was a change of the configuration on my server (only the folders are different now, a domain name change, otherwise the same).

Now, afterwards, the site loads normal, but I cannot access the back end.
I used a master pw and a .htaccess protection by admin tools.
The (internet-) server gives me a 500, the localhost: "access denied".

I tried, as I saved the site before my provider made the changes, and tried to reinstall it locally.
The setup information above is local: MAMP on MacOS.

Here the login won't accept my password!
I did not forget it, but it won't work.
I'd like to fix the site locally then upload it and install Admin Tools there.

Of course I checked "Use folders under your new site roots" and also "Change super admin password".
I tried to erase the dot-files in the administrator folder, as is your advice in the docs, but that won't work either.

Is there a way to take Admin Tools out altogether and access the default Joomla backend?

Thanks for help.

Please remove the .htaccess and .htpasswd files from your administrator directory. Do note that these files are hidden and normally not visible using Finder. You will need another file browsing utilitiy (e.g. PathFinder) to see and delete them.

Thanks, Nicholas, this worked!
I did not properly delete those files - instead I copied an empty text file upon them in the standard Finder -- that didn't work. Only deleting them works. Thanks! I'm in.

In the end it was very simple:

my provider told me, I can change the view-settigs of my FTP-client, did that, erased the two dot-files and - voilá - can access the admin-area again.
