Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (troubleshooting 2013 releases)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (Installing troubleshooting)? Yes
Joomla! version: (2.25.11)
PHP version: (5.3.25)
MySQL version: (5.1.69-cll)
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)
Admin Tools version: (updating to 2.5.6 from previous version)

Description of my issue:

A couple of weeks before updating to 2.5.6 this site was migrated from a reseller server to another server within the same host company. Up until then updating Admin tools and Backup had worked flawlessly. Not saying they did anything wrong, that's just the timeline.

Updated to 2.5.6 and 500 Error etc.

Checked 'system information' > 'configuration file
log_path >/home/xxxxxx/public_html/logs
tmp_path > /home/xxxxxx/public_html/tmp
which corresponds with the settings in 'Global Configuration'

however in 'PHP Settings'
open_basedir > /home2/xxxxxx:/usr/lib/php:/usr/php4/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php:/usr/local/php4/lib/php:/tmp

Should that be /home2/xxxxxx:/... or just /home/xxxxxx:/usr/......?

Folowed your instructions 'If your server is using PHP 5.3 but you get a blank page, PHP error or Internal Server Error 500' and although the instructions are clear, managed to mash it.
Well not completely. I did regain access to the 'Extension Manager', then uploaded 2.5.6 and installed twice.
When I put a 2 in tmp_path > /home2/xxxxxx/public_html in 'Global Configuration' I get:

JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Plugin Install: Failed to create directory: /home/xxxxxx/public_html/plugins/system/admintools
JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Plugin Install: Failed to create directory: /home/xxxxxx/public_html/plugins/system/atoolsupdatecheck
JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Plugin Install: Failed to create directory: /home/xxxxxx/public_html/plugins/system/atoolsjupdatecheck
JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Plugin Install: Failed to create directory: /home/xxxxxx/public_html/plugins/quickicon/atoolsjupdatecheck
JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Library Install: Failed to create directory: /home/xxxxxx/public_html/libraries/fof
JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Files Install: Failed to find source directory: /home/xxxxxx/public_html/media/akeeba_strapper

Take out the 2 in tmp_path > /home/xxxxxx/public_html I get:

JFolder::create: Path not in open_basedir paths
Unable to create destination

And of course various parts of Admin Tools are not installed along with 'Error 500'. I've sure borked it somewhere.
Hunted various Joomla sites as well as here for answers though nothing quite fits or maybe I just need it spelt out LOUD.

So can I just uninstall Admin and Akeeba Backup and all associated files from 'Extension Manager' > 'Manage' and make a fresh start. Would it be that simple or are there other areas I have to dig into, say phpMyadmin.
Realise I'll lose all settings etc, so be it. Feeling kinda naked without Admin and the best backup out there.

One more question. In cPanel File Manager I have:
.htaccess.admintools - 9.31kb
.htaccess.admintools - 7.97kb
.htaccess.bk - 8.05kb
.htaccess 3.09kb
Is this as it should be?

Thanks for a great product.

The only one who can answer that question without guessing is your host. Either their open_basedir is wrong or the wrong path is reported to PHP. I'd guess that their open_basedit is wrong.

Thanks Nicholas

Ah, so open_basedir is the culprit, will chase that up with the host.

Thanks again Heather
