Description of my issue:

I have upgraded a number of sites to Joomla 2.5.11 successfully this morning using Admin Tools but I am getting errors when I try it on one particular site. When I click upgrade I get the following type of error:

ERROR: Could not open /home/maysnew1/public_html/installation/CREDITS for writing

Is this something that you can help me with please?

This is a permissions issue. No problem, though, it's already thought of! You just need to use the FTP mode in the Joomla! update page in Admin Tools.

Thanks Nicholas,

I've tried that but it keeps on telling me:

ERROR: Wrong FTP username or password

I have checked the details that I'm using by copying and pasting to normal FTP package and that connects OK - so I am using the correct username and password for the site.

What should I be putting in: FTP Directory to your site's root?

Hello Mark,

If it's complaining about a wrong FTP username or password then one of those is incorrect (or you are using the wrong FTP host)

Regarding the FTP directory, it's already documented:
Initial directory
The FTP directory to your web site's root. This is not the same as the filesystem directory and can't be determined automatically. The easiest way to determine it is to connect to your site using your favourite FTP client, such as FileZilla. Navigate inside your web site's root directory. You'll know you are there when you see the file configuration.php and directories such as administrator, component, language, includes, cache and xmlrpc in that directory. Copy (in FileZilla it appears on the right hand column, above the directory tree) and paste that path in Akeeba Backup's setting.

Nicholas,

Finally figured out what was stopping the normal update - the disk quota was almost full - not enough room to create the temporary files etc.

Sorry to trouble you and thanks for your help.
