Description of my issue:

Hi Nicholas,

I hope you had a pleasant weekend.

I have a dilemma that I hope you can help me with and would like to ask you a couple of questions. First I need to fill in some background for you. Prior to installing Akeeba Admin and Akeeba Backup into my Joomla website, I would back up my SQL database by using my host (Fat Cow) agents process. The process downloads a copy of the SQL DB to a file on my computer. Then I would use an ftp (Cyber Duck) to move a copy of the Joomla files from the host server to my computer. I want to do this when I have made a lot of changes to my website, because I can then move the files to a thumb drive where they are well protected and cannot be accessed by the Internet. I’m a belt, suspenders, and twine type person when it comes to a well-protected backup. I do this type of a backup about once a month.

I installed Akeeba Backup because it is a very efficient way to do regular backups and comes highly recommended. I use it almost daily and it does a very good job of protecting my backup data except for the rare occurrence of the hosting server being corrupted. I also installed Akeeba Admin as it was also highly recommended by the OSTraining folks.

Ever since I installed Akeeba Admin and Akeeba backup, the ftp process fails and I receive the following error message.

So the questions are: Is there a solution for this ftp failure issue? And/or, is there a way to use Akeeba Backup that allows me to download the backup file to my computer where I can put it on a thumb drive for safe storage?

Thanks,

Roland Shaw

Hello Roland,

Neither Admin Tools not Akeeba Backup can interfere with the FTP process running on your server. PHP and the FTP server are very different things, not possibly connected (it's technically impossible). As a result the FTP issue you have with the installation of our software is not related.

That said, I am looking at the error message and wonder what exactly are you doing in that directory. It's not where any backup is stored. If you want to download the backups created with Akeeba Backup you have to go to administrator/components/com_akeeba/backup, not administrator/components/com_admintools/akeeba/core. In fact, you have no possible interest in modifying the files in that directory unless you are a developer. That directory contains the files of Admin Tools' copy of the Akeeba Engine, used by the PHP File Change Scanner.

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for the input. I'll pass all of this to my contact at Fat Cow.

Before we go any further. It is important to our relationship that you know I do not tinker with other people's software. My curiosity don't run in that direction. I'm a systems engineer by trade. I use software make observations and if I have an issue I go back to the source and report what I observed. I will never fool with your code. But know if I observe something that is not expected I will send you a report of my observations.

On that note I thought about what you said and I did fine the exact file that is causing the failure. It is located on the hosting system in the following location:

JOOMLA, administrator,components,com_akeeba,core,04.quota.ini

I did FTPs on all the files and folders in the 'core' folder. Starting with the last file one at a time and woking my way back to the core folder. All of the files successfully ftp'd that were in the core folder except - 04.quota.ini . I have no idea what its function is but anytime I ftp it or when it is included in a group of files the ftp fails.

I have included a screen shot of the failure. Please know that all of the files in the core folder including the 'domain' folder ftp'd successfully, but the file 04.quota.ini always fails. I also have screen shots of all the other successful files that I ftp'd if you want or need them.

If you have any thoughts that might solve this issue I'd be glad to hear what they are.

My last question is are you able to open an read Preview files in your trouble ticket tool. I've been changing my screen shots into pdf files in case you can't

Thanks again,

Rolan shaw

Hello Rolan,

I never thought that you were trying to mess around with the code :) I just wanted to point you to the right direction. You seemed a bit lost in the filesystem. No worries, it happens.

Now, regarding that file, you should never actually need to upload or download it. I suspect that the file's permissions are wrong, but this is something your host's technicians can verify and/or investigate further.

Hi Nicholas,

You do put in some long hours. I'll pass this last piece to Ann at Fat Cow. She is off today. Thanks and I'll let you know how it turns out. I did google the file and what you say makes sense.

It already been a long day for me and it's only 1:30pm. Maybe I should take a break. I am getting the hang of Joomla.

Thanks,

Roland Shaw

Hi Nicholas,

Just to take this to ground. Ann told me to zip the JOOMLA file on the host file manager and then to ftp it to my computer. Jumping to the end, I now have a complete set of front and backend file on a thumb drive.

Thank you for your indulgence. I learned a lot. Still lots to go, but it is moving the correct direction.

Thanks,
Roland Shaw
