Hello,

This is more of a question relating to Akeeba Backup and Admin Tools but I am posting it here.

I have a subscription but often build a website then hand it over to the client who uses multiple companies to build websites. My problem is this, I don't want other companies to use/benefit from my download ID.

It's not a problem to always login and get the ID if I need it again but is it possible for you to hide the ID once it is entered into Admin Tools/Akeeba Backup so that others cannot re-use it on other websites?

You can't because that would require modifying the config.xml file of the component after entering the Download ID. This would be problematic for several reasons, file permissions being just the tip of the iceberg. It would also make it impossible to modify it if, say, you changed your password/email on AkeebaBackup.com (which invalidates the old Download ID and generates a new one). Even if you could, it would make no sense as your clients could still see it in the Live Update page.

What I will do is add a new feature on our site, creating additional Download IDs. These can be individually enabled/disabled any time you want. If a client abuses your subscription to us you will disable their Download ID and shut them off.

That sounds awesome!

It might sound funny my request as it helps you but I am all for people paying for software they use and if they want to use it they have to buy a subscription. In my case I don't want other companies who develop components for them to go into the back-end and take my download ID.

What would work awesome with the above mentioned solution is showing a log or just last URL that requested update using that ID. That way if it's a different URL or then more importantly a site I am not working on then I can change the ID and open a can of whip-ass on them. At the moment I cannot see waht domains are requesting updates using that ID so a shorter solution should be just to display a historical log of what domains requested updates using the ID even if one ID is used.

Providing a log of domain names requesting updates could be a bit problematic for both technical and legal reasons. I will, however, explore this possibility.

Ok, well I will close the ticket, thanks for listening and look forward to a possible controlled solution in the future.
