Is the iPad a clue?

The URLs are, of course, invalid but we cannot generate them from our website

Any advice would be welcome

This seems to be a legitimate attack or a legitimate bug in your site when viewed from an iPad (I can't tell which by looking at the log message). I would recommend trying to access your site from an actual iPad (as opposed to an iPad "simulator" - they only simulate the screen size) and see if you end up with this kind of invalid URLs.

Maybe I can save you the trouble. I am visiting your site on my iPad 2 and I don't see anything strange.
