Nicholas,

1) I might be helping someone convert their HTML website to Joomla. I want to install Akeeba Backup Pro and Admin Tools Pro on their sites if I do the conversion for them. I already have subscriptions for both Akeeba extensions. Do I need to pay you for another subscription for each since those extensions will be installed on someone else's site I might work on?

2) I noticed you have the Redirect feature on AT Pro. I don't enable the Apache Rewrite feature of my Joomla site Global Config. So my URL's all have the /index.php/ in them. Years ago I had a problem with conflicts in my old HTML site with Apache URL rewrites and Plesk. Do you recommend using the Apache Rewrite and AT Pro Redirect feature to remove the /index.php/ and redirect all my existing URLs?

Thanks for any advice.

Hello Guy,

1. You can use your existing subscription on as many sites as you please. In fact, I definitely encourage you to do so! The idea is that the more sites you use it on, the less you get to pay per site and the more likely you are to remain a subscriber. We all win :)

2. The URL Redirect feature in Admin Tools doesn't have anything to do with your URLs. You need to look into your site's Global Configuration. Enable Use Apache Rewrite. You don't need to use Admin Tools' URL redirection; Joomla! will be automatically issuing redirections when necessary.

Nicholas,

Okay, but is there a way for me to use AT Pro when creating the .htaccess file that will give the correct 301 redirect (permanently moved) for all my site URL's if I now enabled the Global Config rewrite to remove the /index.php from all my URLs?

I think I might want to enable the Joomla rewrites but I need to figure out how to send the correct 301's to Google/Bing when they crawl the site. I've got over 300,000 pages already indexed by Google and I don't want them to get all 404s for those URLs if I make the change. If there's a way to do it with AT Pro that would be great.

Thanks for any advice.

In case I wasn't clear enough: You MUST NOT use .htaccess to redirect from non-SEF to SEF URLs! If you really, really, REALLY want to do that you have to MANUALLY list all non-SEF URLs, match them with their SEF counterparts and enter the redirects manually in .htaccess (either editing the file or in the custom section of the .htaccess Maker). You will end up with several thousands of lines of .htaccess code and your site will become dead slow, adding anywhere from 4-30 seconds per request.

When you enable SEF URLs the non-SEF URLs will still be parsed. The only difference is that the URLs which will appear on your page will now be SEF (without the index.php). In a period of a few weeks to a few months all search engines will be updated with the new URLs.

Nicholas,

Okay, thank you for letting me know that. I think I'll test out using the Joomla extension ReDJ to see if that can work well with a RegEx to send the correct 301 Redirect error to Google/Bing when I enable URL rewrites to remove the /index.php/ in the URLs. http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/site-management/url-redirection/7189

You should work for Google or Microsoft. With your knowledge about managing/coding website security, etc. you would make a ton of money with their employee stock options.

Thanks!

Everything I wrote about Admin Tools' redirection feature and your use case applies to ReDJ, Joomla!'s own URL rewriting feature and every other redirection component.

I can't work for someone else. Scratch that. I don't want to work for someone else :) I seriously enjoy autonomy and hate it when I have to do something I don't enjoy because someone else says so. Before starting AkeebaBackup.com I had worked as a business consultant and field Mechanical Engineer. Eventually I got dismayed by the "do as we say, or else" reality of being an employee, gave my two weeks notice and started my own company. I'm doing pretty good and enjoying every moment. This, my friend, can't be quantified and substituted with stock options. Hm, let's see how I can say this in other words. It's the difference between flying and watching videos of birds flying ;)
