Mandatory information about my setup: (multiple)

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Joomla! version: (unknown) Multiple, primarily 2.5.8
PHP version: (unknown)  5.3.14
MySQL version: (unknown)  Apache/2.2
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you) Rackspace
Admin Tools version: (unknown)  2.3.2

Description of my issue:

I have 4 sites which I would like to upgrade (Admin Tools) from 2.3.2 and verify htaccess settings are correct. The update is asking for me to do so to manually.  Can I hire your services or can you refer me elsewhere as I am short on time to figure out myself?

Thanks

The upgrade is simple: just use the Live Update feature included in Admin Tools Professional (the Update Found button).

Regarding .htaccess, if your site works without a problem then your settings are correct. Hiring someone to check your settings is kinda pointless as that someone can't possibly test all features of your site without asking for an exorbitant amount of money.

On the sites in question, pressing the Live Update button yields... "Unable to open archive Extracting the update package failed. Please try updating the extension manually."

This is a minor nuissance, but it's easy to overcome. Download the latest Professional release's ZIP file from our site. For each one of your sites you want to upgrade just log in to its administrator back-end, go to Extensions, Manage Extensions and use the Browse button to locate Admin Tools Professional's ZIP file. Click on Upload & Install and the update is done.

FYI, the Live Update merely automates the download from our site. It will then simply call Joomla!'s extensions installer – the same thing as the manual installation. I prefer having a single method to do installations and upgrades. It's infinitely easier from a project management prespective :)

OK, I managed to achieve the updates so on to the htaccess question. Within Admin Tools, it states....."For further protection of your site, also use the .htaccess Maker feature of this component"

The verbiage that follows that option gives me the hebegeebies, even though I have a support subscription.

"Due to varying compatibiity of the following settings among servers, applying the .htaccess file may cause inability to access your site with a white page or an Internal Server Error 500 message. In this case, remove the .htaccess and try disabling some options before reapplying.

If some of the aspects of your site suddenly stop working it's up to you to find the proper exceptions required for their correct operation. Instructions are given in the component's documentation. Alternatively, you can purchase a support subscription on our site and request personalised assistance."

I want these sites to be as secure as possible, so please advise if I should continue on my own or wait until I know support is available in concert with my time zone.

Thanks

The warning is designed to have you read the fine manual. The process you have to follow is dead simple. Here's what you need to know (it's in big boxes in the documentation):

If you ever want to revert to a "safe default", just set all of the options on this page to "Off" and click on "Save and create .htaccess". This will create a .htaccess file which is essentially the same as the one shipped with Joomla! (htaccess.txt).

and

Depending on your web server settings, some of these options may be incompatible with your site. In this case you will get a blank page or an Internal Server Error 500 error page when trying to access any part of your site. If this happens, you have to remove the .htaccess file from your site's root directory using an FTP application or the File Manager feature of your hosting control panel. Since Admin Tools 1.2, your old .htaccess file is saved as .htaccess.admintools. You can rename that file back to .htaccess to revert to the last known good state. If you are unsure how this works, please consult your host before trying to create a new .htaccess file using this tool

Some prepackaged server environments, like WAMPserver, do not enable Apache's mod_rewrite module by default, which will always result in an Internal Server Error upon applying the .htaccess file. In this case you are strongly suggested to enable it. On WAMPserver you can click on its tray icon, go to Apache, Modules and make sure rewrite_module is checked. On other server environments you have to edit your httpd.conf file and make sure that the LoadModule mod_rewrite line is not commented out (there is no hash sign in front of it). Once you do either of these changes, you must restart your server for the change to become effective.

We strongly suggest that you begin by setting all options to No and then enable them one by one, creating a new .htaccess file after you have enabled each one of them. If you bump into a blank or error page you will know that the last option you tried is incompatible with your host. In that case, remove the .htaccess file, set the option to No and continue with the next one. Unfortunately, there is no other way than trial and error to deduce which options may be incompatible with your server.

I believe that's clear enough, right?

Regarding support, I believe that your timezone is a bit opposite to mine. I live in GMT+2 and I'm usualy awake from 07:00 GMT to about 23:00 GMT. However, the business hours –as noted in the Support Availability block at the bottom of the page– is 08:00 to 15:00 GMT. You can use http://timeanddate.com/ to convert GMT to your local timezone.
