Description of my issue:

Nicholas,

On your support doc page at: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/admin-tools/htaccess-maker.html

It says: "In this case you will get a blank page or an Internal Server Error 500 error page when trying to access any part of your site. If this happens, you have to remove the .htaccess file from your site's root directory using an FTP application or the File Manager feature of your hosting control panel."

I sometimes (not always) get 500 Internal Server Errors in the browser when I access my Addon domain site and my subdomain site. Here are the details:

1) My main domain site files are in the /public_html folder of the root and it works great with AT Pro and the .htaccess Maker.

2) I have a clone testing site of my main domain site files which are in the folder /public_html/test2site

3) I have an Addon domain site and the folder for those site files are located in the folder /public_html/mydomain2.org

4) I have a subdomain site and the folder for those site files are located in the folder /public_html/myfolder3/myfolder4

This subdomain site (#4) which has the most problems with getting 500 errors often in the browser (but sometimes the pages display fine). I attached a screenshot image.

Since the main domain in the root has the .htaccess Maker file for security, do I need to add the subfolder sites to the root site's .htaccess Maker setting of: "Allow direct access, including .php files, to these directories"

Will that prevent the 500 server errors and then the .htaccess Maker installation of those subfolder sites give me the AT Pro security protection I need since those site's will have their own .htaccess file in their root folders?

Thanks for any advice!

If an issue is caused by Admin Tools, it is something which will always happen. If it's an intermittent issue you have a different error, e.g.:

  • a plugin which only fires once in a while encounters an error
  • Joomla! and its extensions try to consume more memory than is allowed by the server's php.ini file
  • you have a timeout error
  • the server experiences a different kind of error

The only way to find out what's going on is looking in your server error log for PHP fatal errors. If unsure how to do that, please contact your hosting provider. They are the only people who can possibly give you accurate instructions on how to do that.

Nicholas,

Okay, I will close the ticket and contact the hosting support. I think you're correct because a few nights ago my server started having problems and giving errors in the CPanel when I setup an Addon Domain. My Gmail SMTP also stopped working in the Joomla Global Configs after that. So it's probably the server files/settings are corrupted/incorrect.

Thanks.
