Hi Nicholas,
OSTraining thought you'd be interested in this thread:
http://www.ostraining.com/support-forum/joomla-support/prompts-to-update-to-joomla-30/#p57489

The site in question is a Joomla 2.5.6 site. (ignore the mention in the first post that it is a 2.5.7 site) It is soon to be deleted. I'm not updating it, in case you would like to see this issue in person. I could give you a login.

I would like to update it to 2.5.7 and back it up before it's deleted, so if you have no need of looking under the hood, let me know.

I believe that Steve contacted you and you said:
I finally found what was causing that issue

If you have a site with an old version of Joomla!, e.g. 2.5.4, an email has to be sent out to remind you to upgrade from 2.5.4 to 2.5.7. Here's the problem. The plugin sees this:

- Installed version: 2.5.4

- Latest available: 2.5.7

- Available STS: 3.0.1

and freaks out. It sends out an email stating that the installed version is 2.5.7 and the latest available is 3.0.1. What needs to be done is to follow the update link and update. I mean, update to 2.5.7, not 3.0.1.

Is this a bug? I know you don't want people to make the mistake of updating to 3.0.

If you don't need to look under the hood, tell me and I'll update and backup the site before it's deleted.

thanks,
Hope

Hello Hope,

Yes, it is a bug. After Steve from OS Training brought this matter to my attention there was another client's site where the same thing occurred. Luckily the other client offered me access to his site and I found out that the problem was linked to the fact that he was running a version of Joomla! which wasn't the latest in the 2.5.x range. Due to two small typos in the Joomla! update notification plugin (typing current instead of installed was one – it was very easy to miss the typo) it caused the erroneous emails to be sent. I have been able to replicate this issue, identify its source and fix it. After doing so I thought it would be a good idea to let Steve know so that he can relay this information back to you.

A new release is planned for this week – pending a few more checks – which will permanently solve this issue. Since I've been able to replicate and address the issue on 3 different test sites (plus another live site) I consider this issue solved and I don't need access to your site. Therefore I would recommend upgrading your site to Joomla! 2.5.7 a.s.a.p. due to security concerns arising from using an outdated Joomla! version on a live site.
