Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? yes

Have I searched the tickets before posting? yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Not all
Joomla! version: (2.6.3)
PHP version: (unknown)
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you) Cloudaccess
Admin Tools version: (I believe it was just updated to latest prior to lock out)

Description of my issue:

I have a user name and password that I set up and did not change (knowingly). I get a 401 authorization request when I try to access backend. I have already gone into FTP Filezilla to change main.php to main-disable.php within system, admintools folder, as mapped out on the atwafissues.html page above.

After that I erased all history in cache. I am still getting the login requirement pop up when trying to access backend.

I originally set up my ip as a whitelisted ip.
Here's the catch....
We like euro football here and are in the states so we downloaded a program that is a VPN service to watch euro football on internet. The thing is, I am certain I am putting the right password and user name into the Admintools authorization request. And I have tried several variations to account for possible typo, etc... But my browser saved the login info for me.

I have shut down the VPN service software and checked whatsmyipaddress and it is correct to my location and system.

I am still getting a request for admin password to enter backend (for which I apparently have wrong one) even after shutting down browser, clearing cache, and restarting. I have checked this on chrome, safari, and firefox. Still same request.

What am I missing? What do you suggest I try next to get into backend? I can get in to admin on frontend to post new articles but that is all.

I don't have access to another computer. Just this one. See attached pop up on Firefox as example.

This is caused by the .htaccess file written by the administrator password protection feature of Admin Tools. This is handled by Apache, long before Joomla! (and Admin Tools) loads. Please read this: https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/troubleshooter/atadminpw.html

THX. Have since remembered the obscure passwd. So problem resolved without having to mess around in Apache htaccess file.

Lesson learned. Will keep it written in a safe place anymore.

You'r welcome! Password management applications are a big help with this. I am using 1Password. Its Dropbox sync is a big plus :)
