Joomla! version: 1.5.26
PHP version: v2.2.0
MySQL version: 5.1.58
Host: local
Admin Tools version: Admin Tools Professional 2.2.9

Description of my issue:

Had a hacking attempt last night. User got in, I shut the site down and removed the user that was affected user. After I deemed the site safe. I ran the file scanner. As it was running I left it be and did other tasks. The File Scanner ended up running for 8 hours and DoS'd the server. I restarted the server and all was well.

Is this an error with the file scanner?

What recommended action should I take. Is this an error with my app config, server config or is it potentially from the attack?

Thank you all!

Running the File Scanner is no different than running a full site backup. If you have a very big site with a tonne of PHP files it will take a lot of resources to scan it. Going up to the point of causing your server to hang is extremely unlikely but not impossible.

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for the quick reply.

I can backup the entire site within 2 minutes using akeeba backup.

This also pushes my CPU to 95% of max where a backup didn't get to 40% (both of these include all other processes).

Admin Tools works great other than this and gave me a head start on the attack.

I guess that was an unrelated server problem which coincided with the file scan. Admin Tools uses the same engine as Akeeba Backup. The only difference is that instead of compressing the files into an archive it calculates an MD5 sum and stores it in the database. In fact, File Scanner is only 30%-50% more resource intensive than a backup.
