Description of my issue:

You have been so helpful in the past (and so knowledgable) that I thought I would ask you about a problem that I am having with a shopping cart site HarryChapinMusic.com . I don't have any evidence that it has to do with AdminTools but of course it is possible with the restrictions set there.

At the end of the VirtueMart shopping cart process customers cannot complete their orders- sometimes- because the firewall is receiving too many concurrent connections and shuts them out.

My understanding of the web server is that connections are kept open for an amount of time so they can be reused, if they are not reused they can stay open and count up until the number 5 is reached and then the firewall kicks in.

I can reproduce it at will, by doing a flood ping attack. Not that this is normal but it highlites the problem.
I think the limit of concurrent connections needs to be increased but the host says that they have never had problems like this on any other Joomla site.

It has seriously effected the number of orders we are receiving.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much, Tim

Hi Tim,

A guess is that there is a misbehaving plugin which runs a long (really long!) query on each request, causing the AJAX requests fired by VM to leave connections open for a very long time. However, I'd expect the whole site to be sluggish.

Another possibility is that you are behind a CDN. In this case all requests made by logged in users would appear as originating from the same IP address, which would explain this issue.

A third possibility is using the deprecated Akeeba Backup Lazy Scheduling plugin which has a gazillion issues and could cause something like that (little wonder it's deprecated and not supported anymore!).

I can't think of anything else right now.
