Mandatory information about my setup:

Have I read the related troubleshooter articles above before posting (which pages?)? Yes
Have I searched the tickets before posting? Yes
Have I read the documentation before posting (which pages?)? Yes, https://www.akeebabackup.com/documentation/admin-tools/waf-ip-whitelist.html
Joomla! version: 2.5.4
PHP version: 5.3
MySQL version: (unknown)
Host: (optional, but it helps us help you)
Admin Tools version: Pro 2.5.4

Description of my issue:

Until now I used a custom .htaccess file in my administrator directories of my client's websites. I use a simple IP check. When I need to add of change this I log in to my server and add/modify this .htaccess file.

Now I bought Admin Tools Pro. I would like to use this component to protect the admin login in the same way. I removed the .htacces in the administrator directory. I changed the setting in Admin Tools (WAF) to 'Allow administrator access only to IPs in Whitelist' --> YES. And I added my IP to the whitelist.

Seems to work OK. When I try to access the backend from another IP I get redirected to the website frontend.

Now my question: I do not have a static (fixed) Ip address from my internet provider. I does not change much, but it could. When it does, I am blocked from my site. right? So how do I add my new IP to the whitelist when this happens? Or do I just delete/replace the .htaccess in my website root with the default Joomla .htaccess?

Thanks!

When your IP changes, you are blocked from accessing your site. That's the whole purpose of having the white-list, right? :) When that happens, just follow the "My own IP is blocked?!" troubleshooting instructions. Basically, you will be using FTP to disable Admin Tools' plugin, change your IP in the whitelist and then reactivate the plugin.

OK, thanks! Just what I was looking for. I like to know this before it happens ;-)

Thanks for your fast reply. And for the great tool!

Can I ask you another question about Akeeba backup? I now use Xcloner on all my website. I've been using it or quit a long time and am quit happy with it. But recently I had some problems with a restore. And since I realy like what Akeeba is doing, I 'm thinking of making a switch to Akeeba Backup. But I have some questions:

- Can I use cronjobs (Plesk / Linux) for Akeeba Backup?
- Can I store the backup on a remote server (only)? Using sFTP?
- Can the backup be compressed in tar or zip so I can access it easy when I need just one of two files, or just the database?

Thanks! If I need to ask my question elsewhere, just let me know ;-)

You're welcome!

Regarding Akeeba Backup, normally you should ask that in the Akeeba Backup category but I can still reply here:

1. Yes, of course. You can either roll your own with wget or curl (if you have the free Akeeba Backup Core version) or use our dedicated CLI scripts designed for CRON jobs (if you have the for-a-fee Akeeba Backup Professional version). It's all documented in the "Automating your backups" section of our documentation.

2. Yes, you can store your backup on a remote server, as long as you have Akeeba Backup Professional. Right now we support FTP, FTPS, Amazon S3, Dropbox, Box.net, Windows Azure BLOB Storage, RackSpace CloudFiles, SugarSync and Google Storage. SFTP is currently only supported as a means to transfer the site's files, not a backup archive.

3. Even though the backup can be produced in ZIP format, I don't recommend it. It requires much more resources (increasing the possibility of a failure) and if you have big files most archive extraction tools will complain that the files are corrupt, even though they are not. You can use our own JPA (unencrypted) or JPS (encrypted with AES-128) archives. We have two free tools, Kickstart and Akeeba eXtract Wizard which can be used to extract backup archives in those formats.
